When I did this pastel portrait, I was thinking of the interesting shape of the black hat, as a major compositional element/shape. The rest of the elements also were fun to work with, such as the directional movements of the diagonal and cross-hatched pastel strokes, and the layering of color to form other colors. I felt the expressiveness of the execution as I worked, but only afterward did I realize that I had captured an authentic human attitude - that of an 'older' woman whose strength of personality had not diminished, but even expanded with time. This pastel is professionally matted and framed, with a frame similar in color to the border above.
